The Health Care Ethics Service (HCES) at St. Boniface Hospital and Shared Health Ethics invites you and your colleagues to attend our Health Care Ethics Grand Rounds for October, 2026.


Speaker: Jennifer Dunsford, RN, PhD

 

What do healthcare professionals owe patients when providing care place them at risk of harm? This presentation examines the ethical dilemmas that arise in the context of workplace violence and explores who nurses navigate competing obligations to patients, themselves, and others. Drawing on qualitative research with nurses across Canada, we will consider themes of vulnerability, moral distress, professional identity, and structural constraints that shape ethical decision-making. Attendees will be invited to reflect on the limits of duty to care and the responsibilities of healthcare systems to create environments where both patients and providers can be safe.
